Palermo 20, 21, 22 May 2024
The First National Forum dedicated to Biodiversity was held in Palermo May 20-22, 2024, involving more than 600 scientists and biodiversity experts.
The first day, May 20, was dedicated to assessing the state of biodiversity, protected areas and parks in Italy. Experts discussed current issues related to invasive and endemic animal and plant species that threaten Italian biodiversity. Among the invasive species analyzed, in addition to the blue crab and black cherry, other animals and insects such as ephemeroptera were mentioned, along with the serious problem of fires devastating ecosystems.
On May 21, the focus shifted to Europe-wide biodiversity restoration. Experts discussed strategies to strengthen forests and rehabilitate wetlands and coastlines, in line with the Nature Restoration Law, which aims to restore 30% of land and marine areas by 2030 and all degraded ecosystems by 2050.
In the afternoon, the Open Innovation Workshop was held at the Faculty of Engineering of the University of Palermo, with the participation of companies such as Dompè, Aboca, Novamont, FS Sistemi Urbani and ENEL. During the workshop, entrepreneurs, researchers and innovators discussed health-related topics, such as the microbiota, and the use of bioactive molecules derived from plants and marine organisms for the production of cosmetics, drugs and food. Other topics covered included sustainable fisheries, aquaculture, and innovative technologies for biodiversity monitoring, such as Deep Tech, marine robotics, remote sensing satellites, and artificial intelligence.
During the Forum, prizes were also awarded to distinguished scientist and the winners of scientific posters, and the Biodiversity Awards were presented by the COTEC Foundation for Innovation.
On May 22, on the occasion of "International day for biological diversity" NBFC's annual report was presented. Riccardo Coratella, NBFC Director General; Massimo Labra, NBFC Scientific Director; Alberto Di Minin, NBFC Innovation Director; and Luca De Biase, Gateway Designer, outlined strategies for a new paradigm in the relationship between humans and nature. The report highlights the importance of moving from linear exploitative practices to sustainable approaches that maintain ecosystem balances, benefiting both the environment and humans. Biodiversity is presented as a key solution to mitigate the effects of climate change and reduce the impact of catastrophic phenomena such as floods and heat waves, as well as being fundamental to the well-being of people and the preservation of Italian cultural traditions.
The proceedings were closed by Luigi Fiorentino, President of NBFC, and Prof. Massimo Midiri, Rector of the University of Palermo.
