What is the role of education for biodiversity? How education can contribute to one of the most sensitive and decisive fronts of the current ecological and climatic crisis? How can we deal with an epoch-making issue that calls for the assumption of responsibility in order to guarantee a future worth living for the new generations, both human and non-human?
The open access book edited by Greta Persico, Monica Guerra and Andrea Galimberti of the Department of Human Sciences for Education "Riccardo Massa" (University of Milano-Bicocca) "Educare per la biodiversità. Approcci, ricerche, proposte” (FrancoAngeli) explores these questions as a preliminary result of the project developed by the BEAT - Biodiversity Education and Awareness Team, working within the National Biodiversity Future Centre, Spoke 7.
The volume provides a synthesis of the international scientific debate on biodiversity education theories and practices, focusing particularly on the variety of experiential and participatory approaches, often in continuity with the domain of ecological education. At the same time, it proposes the idea that biodiversity education requires specific theoretical frameworks, principles and pedagogical strategies capable of emancipating it from an exotic interpretation - which relegates the problem of protecting the diversity of life to other and faraway worlds - in order to reconnect it to nearby and daily life contexts.
