A group coordinated by Barbara Valle (Università di Siena, NBFC) and Marco Caccianiga (Università di Milano), in collaboration with the floristic group Flora Alpina Bergamasca (FAB) recently described a new species of plant from the Bergamo Prealps (Orobic Prealps, Lombardy, Northern Italy), Campanula bergomensis sp. nov., based on both morphological and molecular evidence. Campanula bergomensis is a steno-endemic species inhabiting dolomitic debris cones at low elevations. The species is range-restricted and is severely threatened by human activities. Therefore, it is urgent to better study its ecology and evolution history and to adopt protection and conservation measures for this new species.
