Assessment, conservation, and monitoring of terrestrial biodiversity, including freshwater ecosystems and diverse terrestrial environments from transitional areas to old-growth forests. Through multidisciplinary approaches ranging from genetic analysis to the study of ecosystem complexity, strategies for habitat fortification, ecosystem strengthening, and identifying Nature Based Solutions (NBS) to restore degraded areas are implemented.

Spoke 3

In Spoke 3, whole-genome sequencing studies of Italian endemic species are moving forward to identify genes of interest in adaptation and conservation process and to search for compounds with potential biotechnological interest, and a study of hyperaccumulator plants capable of restoring contaminated soils. The team is working on development of ecosystem quality assessment tools such as evaluating the effectiveness of protected areas and the Natura 2000 network for conservation. Twentyfour scientific papers and four presentations and extension products have been published.

Spoke 4

In Spoke 4, 12 Broad Sites of terrestrial ecosystems were identified and characterized. The Italian Hub of Nature-Based Solutions was established, the architecture of the Ecosystems and Biodiversity Functions Platform was defined, and the Fire and Biodiversity Working Group was launched and made operational.74 scientific articles 29 presentations and dissemination products were produced.
